Meeting Minutes 27 June 2012

General

  • Approximately 24 members and guests met at 6:30 on the 8th floor of the Helix Building, 310 S. Racine at Jackson. 
  • New Members: 4 new memberships were accepted

Guest Speaker

  • This month's speaker is Mark Gleason, Director of Education and Chief Marine Scientist for the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum in Muskegon, Michigan. Mark is an ROV specialist, having conducted ROV operations to at least 2000 feet in the middle east on both oil rigs and dive boats. Mark has also developed educational programs as Chief Marine Scientist for the Denis Sullivan out of Discovery World in Milwaukee and as an Adjunct Faculty member at Grand Valley State University, and as the Director for the Isle Royale Institute at Michigan Tech University in Houghton, MI.

Bonus Presentation

  • This evening’s Bonus Speaker was past UASC President, Tony Kiefer. He continued his review of the finer points of wooden ship construction, especially as it applied to Great Lakes saiing vessels. Of special note was his primary reference work “Wooden Ship Building” by Charles Desmond. Originally published in 1919, reprints are available
  • Tonight's meeting was conducted by our President, John Bell. Refreshments were provided by Robert Hughes and Juli Scheibe.

  • We are in the fortunate position of exceeding our membership limit in our current email database. If you have more than one email address we may need to delete one. This also forces us to be strict with retaining members with unpaid dues.

    • 2 great issues have been produced so far this year. Articles, graphics, dive reports and all other contnet, don’t appear spontaneously.   • ICSSD – Claire Gadbois reported on the Illinois Council of Skin and Scuba Divers:
    • July 29th will be the annual Jim Haigh Memorial Dive at Haigh Quarry.
    • President’s Night will be October 27th, at Morettis’s Restaurant,at Busse Rd and Oakton. It will cost $25 per person for the banquet.
  • Upcoming 2012 ICSSD events are:
    • October 6th Pumpkin Carving at Haigh Quarry sponsored by the Tritons.
    • President's Night - Oct 27th, at Morettis's Restaurant,at Busse Rd and Oakton. It will cost $25 per person for the banquet.
  • DiveHeart Liaison - Don Doherty
    • Trip to Cozumel planned.
    • Diveheart is looking for donations of old scuba gear for pool training.
    • Check the DiveHeart web site for info on upcoming events.
  • Ghost Ships Festival, at the Wyndom Hotel, near Mitchell Field, Milwaukee, is the next big event before dive season starts to kick into high gear

  • TBA a future archaeological training course is being organized through B. J.’s Scuba. This course follows NAS principles and will offer scuba gear on training at Haigh Quarry
