Meeting Minutes 23 February 2011

General

  • Approximately 30 members and guests met at 6:30 on the 8th floor of the Helix Building, 310 S. Racine at Jackson.
    • Guests: 3
  • Tonights meeting was run by Don Doherty, with refreshments provided by Delphine Pontvieux and Hank Fiene.

Board and Committee Reports

  • President - Don Doherty
    • New membership premiums offer extended from OWU through tonight's meeting.
      • ( The same offers will be made at Ghost Ships, and extended one last time to the March meeting. )
  • Secretary - John Bell provided copies of the minutes from the last meeting, which were approved.
    • New membership forms and business cards are available, and will be available at all future meetings.
  • Membership – Rosters were provided by Scott Reimer.
    • Members from 2010 who have not yet renewed their memberships are still included, but marked accordingly.
    • 2 new family and 2 new individuals and 3 renewals this weekend.
  • Treasury –  Bob Gadbois reported on the state of UASC finances.
    • 5 new members dues have arrived
    • The P.O. Box has been paid.
    • $25 bulb fee charged to a group that needed to use the UASC projector.

  • ICSSD – Claire Gadbois reported on the Illinois Council of Skin and Scuba Divers:
    • March 13 - UW Competition Elk Grove. Signin 11:30, competition starts at 12:00. UASC are the defending champions!
    • July 31 - Jim Haigh Memorial Dive
    • September TBA - Cleanup Dive
    • October 2 - Pumpkin Carvind Dive
    • October 22 - President's night next year probably at Sawa's
  • Newsletter – Cris Kohl is out of town
    • A summary edition of the Wreck Checker for 2010 has been produced, sent out to all members, and posted to the UASC web site.
    • Cris thanks all who contribute to the newsletter, past and future.
  • Survey Coordinator - John Gerty
    • Slate for the Buccaneer has been completed
    • Brian Abbott will be sector scanning Car Ferry #2, Material Service, Wells Burt.
    • New images for booth displays have been produced - Material Service, Flora Hill, & Car Ferry #2.
    • Several UASC people working on NAS II certification projects.
  • Dive Coordinators - Nothing tonight
  • Web Site - The new site was brought up an put online in time for the OWU meeting.
    • In general it looks great and works well, though there is still a lot to be done.
    • Requests for specific feedback and input from project leaders, etc. will be forthcoming.
  • DiveHeart Liason - Gene Hasiak
    • Yesterday there was a field neurological evaluation course.
    • Chicago Maritime Festival - Underwater Detectives for young participants. Gene will also be presenting for DiveHeart and also the history of UASC.
    • Check the DiveHeart web site for info on upcoming events.
  • Safety - Chet Childs
    • Looking into CPR course. Sam Frank is available. Half a dozen members showed interest.

New Business

  • New Buccaneer slate produced by John Gerty. Looks GREAT! $6 for members.
  • Our World Underwater Feb 18-20
    • Joan and Cris presented "Booze, Bullets, and the Buccaneer" at the Friday Night Film Festival.
    • Also at the Friday Night Film Festival, Bob Gadbois was awarded the Middle Coast Award.
    • UASC presented booth number 1006
      • John Gerty, Todd Hitzemann, and Michael Angelo Gagliardi provided new display items to freshen up the booth for this year.
      • Many thanks to all who helped set up, take down, and work the booth for this very important show.
    • Larry Boucha and Bob Gadbois from UASC managed the A/V for the show.
    • The booth was very popular. Several college instructors asked for speakers.
    • Bonne Terre Mine asked for premiums in exchange for free advertisement.
    • 20% discounts on custom dry suits. Hank received the card from the vendor.
  • Chicago Maritime Festival Feb 26
    • The Wreck Detective Children's Presentation will be done again by the Loftuses, Gene Hasiak, and others.
    • Tony Kiefer will speak on the Tool Crib Disaster
    • Gene Hasiak will speak on DiveHeart and UASC
    • UASC will have a booth - volunteer signup sheet going around tonight.
  • Ghost Ships Festival will be in Milwaukee March 25th and 26th
    • Booth volunteers needed - Signup sheets will be e-mailed.
    • Joan is presenting a new presentation.
  • ICSSD U/W Competiton March 13th.
    • UASC is the defending champion
    • Dan Kasberger team captain, Don Doherty and Michael Angelo participating.
  • OTHER: Miscellaneous new business items should be brought up – briefly – now.
    • Rahm Emmanuel new mayor. UASC to write a letter of congratulations, suggesting a Chicago Maritime Museum on Northerly Island
    • June 11th, Indiana Dunes State Park,Indiana State Dunes Centennial: 100th anniversary of the J. D. Marshall sinking. Jim Jarecki will be doing a presentation, and would like for others to also present, possibly with the Shipwreck Detectives project. Jim could use some help.
    • David Dows Photos - If anyone has some, please contact Don Doherty.
    • Prins Wilhelm V Wreck Drawing
    • Mike Brutlag - Door County trip planned for Sept 3rd - 7th, Labor Day weekend.
    • Kieth Pearson - Let's get projects going - There are a bunch of wrecks out there worth exploring further.
    • Speakers are always needed.

Guest Speakers -- Joan Forsberg and John Gerty

Joan Forsberg presented "Booze, Bullets, and the Buccaneer", straight from its World Premiere showing at the OWU Friday Night Film Festival.

John Gerty showed a very interesting NAS II presentation on the 12th Street Beach Wreck, which he worked on in conjunction with Cris Kohl and Joan Forsberg.

Other Business

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:00, after which a number of members retired to Ricobene's for further discussions and socializing.
