Hello,

Come join the UASC (Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago) for our next meeting on Wednesday, February 26th, at the Chicago Maritime Museum, 1200 W 35th St, Chicago, IL. This is in the Bridgeport Art Center Building. Enter at the door under the awning that says North Entrance off the north parking lot and go downstairs. We will start the meeting at 7:00pm.

This month we will have Diana Gerberich as our guest speaker. Her presentation is titled;

Predicting High-Risk Shipwreck Areas off the Coast of Massachusetts

This project uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to highlight areas with high shipwreck potential. It analyzes more than 10 geographic factors including bathymetry, wind speed, and obstructions and combines them into one relative risk value. The result is a map displaying predicted shipwreck risk areas in Massachusetts waters.

Diana Gerberich is a 2018 graduate of Harvard College with a degree in Archaeology & Social Anthropology. She discovered her love of shipwrecks while taking a maritime archaeology course at Harvard. This then led her to complete a summer internship with the Navy's Underwater Archaeology Branch at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. In addition to shipwrecks, she is passionate about GIS, geography, and maps. A native of western Massachusetts, Diana moved to Chicago in September 2018 and has taken up an interest in the shipwrecks of the Great Lakes ever since.

See you there,

Colin Bertling
UASC President
