Hello,

Come join the UASC (Underwater Archaeological Society of Chicago) for our next meeting on Wednesday, November 20th, at the Chicago Maritime Museum, 1200 W 35th St, Chicago, IL. This is in the Bridgeport Art Center Building.  Enter at the door under the awning that says North Entrance off the north parking lot and go downstairs.  We will start the meeting at 7:00pm.

Our speaker this month, Kimm Stabelfeldt, will present his fieldwork and survey of the remains of Milwaukee’s historic Fireboat Number 23.  Built at Sturgeon Bay in 1896 as the August F. Janssen, she was a landmark on the Milwaukee waterfront and participated in several notable fires over her 27 year career.  She was a wooden tug of 100 ft in length with massive boilers to power her firefighting equipment. The 23 was scrapped in 1922 and scuttled in Lake Michigan on July 27, 1923. In 2005, her remains were located a few miles off Milwaukee Harbor by area charter captain Jerry Guyer.

Mr. Stabelfeldt held one of the largest private collections of Great Lakes books and ephemera in Wisconsin. In 2014 he donated it to the Wisconsin Historical Society. He is the author of seven Great Lakes dive guides. Mr. Stabelfeldt’s work has been published in numerous periodicals. He was a Director of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation, Inc. which held the annual Ghost Ships Festival each year in Milwaukee. He is the Director of Great Lakes Shipwreck Archaeology. Great Lakes Shipwreck Archeology is a group of volunteer divers interested in archeology on shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. He also holds memberships in all Great Lakes Historical Societies. A certified Extended Tri Mix diver, Mr. Stabelfeldt was the president of Adventure Diving, Inc., a Great Lakes shipwreck dive charter service, and retired as President of DBD Consulting. He holds degrees in Business and Computer Science and was an executive business consultant.

See you there,

Colin Bertling
UASC President
